Stephen Smith
Born in Hertfordshire in 1951, Stephen now works from his home near Maldon in Essex. Entirely self-taught and with no formal qualifications, Stephen became a full-time independent artist in 1986 after working for a number of years as a graphic designer for an electronics manufacturer. Oil painting, however had been his first love since his teens and although occasionally producing illustrations for technical and trade publications, his work is now almost entirely in oils. Stephen has developed a finely detailed style of figurative painting which he brings to a wide range of subjects. These include family and animal portraiture, still life, land and sea scapes and, combining his interest in history, a particularly popular series of interpretaions of pastorall and domestic scenes based on Victorian and Edwardian photgraphs. His commisioned work is now predominantly concerned with horse racing. Having been asked to produce a portrait of Bob Champion and Aldaniti in 1987, Stephen became captivated by the power and grace of thoroughbread horses. His style proved to be ideal to capture the feeling of movement as well as the finer detail required to produce an accurate representation of horse and jockey, and his growing reputation in this feild has resulted in its ioncreasing domination of his output (much of which has been reproduced in a series of limited edition prints). Clients include Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, Royal Doulton, J P McManus, John Magnier, Aiden OBrien, Mark Johnston and jockeys Franie Dettori, Richard Hills, Kieran Fallon, Michael Kinane, and Jamie Spencer. He was also commissioned by Manchester United to produce portraits of Ryan Giggs and David Beckham.
